Since the conception of Readymades by Marcel Duchamp the concept and objects presented as such have been controversial. "An ordinary object elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist." the surrealist dictionary defines in 1924.
Study for Readymades No.01 presents a large industrial mirror as sculpture, placed on the floor removes the mirrors original intent and challenges the way we perceive the object when we are not allowed to be distracted by our own reflection and self awareness that accompanies vanity. The mirror is coupled with a set of small stereo speakers placed on the far sides of its base and an obscured audio source playing a recording created using the likeness of the mirror itself.
The mirror was photographed using a white backdrop to remove all objects from its reflection resulting in a photograph that represents just the object it's self and not the objects purpose. The photograph was then converted to an audio file using software and played back at various speeds allowing for different aural details to reveal themselves.
The mirror, speakers, cable and even the iPod playing the sounds are all mass-produced products and fall under the original intention of Duchamp’s Readymades; to remove the artist’s hands from the work.
